Your Help Is Needed!!

We are collecting items for “Baskets of Cheer” to be given to BVQ members who are going through a tough time dealing with a serious illness, surgery or the death of a loved one. Bring new or “gently used” item(s) to any Guild meeting and give them to Sue, who will store them, and prepare and deliver baskets as needed. Suggested items are candles, CDs, DVDs, books, bath salts, snacks….think of what would YOU like if your were the recipient. Thank you for your help!

We still need a Publicity Chair, a team to coordinate the 2012 Raffle Quilt, and assistants to the President and Program Chairs who are willing to take over those jobs next year for 2010-2011. Please consider taking your turn as an active Guild member! You will be glad you did, because you will have the opportunity to make new friends and to contribute to BVQ's exciting plans and activities.

Donations requested for the March meeting: Do you have any gifts tucked away from this past holiday that would be perfect for someone, just not you? Something that you were saving to “regift”? Bring it in!

Do you have an item that you think would be a wonderfully inspiring start for a basket – maybe a mug, a book, a quilt kit? Bring it in!

For donations of items you make: While you are busy planning or sewing your quilt for the show, consider trying your choice of fabrics or pattern on a small item for the auction – a table runner, a bag, place mats, a small wall hanging. Large quilts also welcome!

Sunshine

Happy Birthday!!!

Patricia McLaughlin   March 17
Diane Camarote   March 20
Diane Kilpatrick   March 22
Nancy Dyroff   March 30

We were saddened to hear that Alice Terné passed away the week of February 14. She was a long-time member and former president of BVQ and also a member of the BrandyWine Bee in the Wilmington area. She lived in Wilmington and was always eager to hear what the guild was doing and tried to attend the meeting when her health was good. We will miss her smile and her quilt making.

Anne Denney is still recovering and BVQ continues to send Best Wishes for a speedy recovery. She writes,
I want to thank the members for the great basket I received...It was a nice treat for me. I felt like the girls didn’t forget me, even though I haven’t been around for along time! I can’t go out in the cold and am hoping it is warm for BJ’s class and did sign up for it. My last chemo treatment is at the end of April. Hope to see you all soon. Love, Anne.”
We wish Barbara Keller success with her upcoming surgery and send healing thoughts her way.

Marty Shea is home and recuperating after being hospitalized recently. Best wishes to Marty as he regains his strength and continues to improve.

Heather Smalley was “under the weather” (pardon the pun) last month, and we will be glad to see her in March feeling much better!

Guild members, please forward Sunshine information (births, deaths, congratulations, etc.) to Ruth Young, so that she can acknowledge our members' birthdays and life events on the Guild's behalf. Thank you for your assistance!

Fabric Fun -- Monthly Raffle

The Fabric Raffle theme again this year is “Going to the Movies”. Each month a different, authentic movie title will be introduced to describe that particular theme for the fabric. Use your wild imagination! Be creative! Bring one or more 100% cotton fat quarters (18" x 22") or a 1/4 yard of fabric in that month's theme to the meeting. You will receive one ticket for one piece of fabric, or three tickets for every two pieces of fabric (they can be different).

February ** March ** April

February's theme is “The Sound of Music”
1965 Musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer
In Salzburg, Austria, Maria is studying to become a nun. However, Reverend Mother is not sure if convent life is right for her. Maria is temporarily sent to be governess to seven children of a stern widower, Captain Georg Ludwig von Trapp. Eventually, they fall in love with each other and wed.

The love fabric this month is hearts. Hearts of any color such as red, blue, green, plain, stripe, plaid, lacy, etc. Also any size hearts, such as large, medium, small, double, elongated, etc.
We will have the February fabric raffle at the March meeting, since the February meeting was cancelled.
Back to Fabric Fun

March's theme is “Easter Parade”
1948 Musical starring Judy Garland, Ann Miller, Fred Astaire
Broadway star Don Hewes bought Easter gifts for his sweetheart, Nadine Hale. Later, he is told by her they are no longer a dance team. Next, Don tries to turn his new partner, Hannah Brown, into a copy of Nadine. There is jealousy and rage between the two women. In the end, Don and Hannah walk in the Easter Parade and Don proposes to Hannah.

Fabric representing the Easter holiday…. baskets, bunnies and chicks, candy, churches, crosses, decorated eggs, new holiday garments for adults and children, such as dresses, funny hats, gloves, jewelry, shirts, shoes, flowering plants, spring scenes, etc.

BVQ Scrap Bag

Scrap Bag News ** What is the Scrap Bag? ** Scrap Bag FAQ ** Scrap Bag Project Ideas

Scrap Bag News

Scrap BAGS!!   Thanks go to the BVQ members who have been giving and taking Scrap Bag scraps! It has been fun to see the results of your creativity at Show 'n Tell. The Scrap Bag has been replenished after our January charity workshop so there's lots more to choose from now! Stay tuned for details about the 2010 BVQ Challenge, which will put our Scrap Bag to good use!

Please limit your donations to quilting fabric scraps no less than 1" wide. Save your pieces larger than fat quarters to donate to Guild auctions or the quilt show bazaar. Donate your unwanted non-quilting fabrics to Goodwill or another charity that can use them. You can help the Scrap Bag Lady by smoothing out and sorting your scraps by color or theme and placing them in zipper plastic bags. Large bags of crumpled, frayed scraps take a while to deal with! Thank you for your help!

What is the Scrap Bag?

Just finished a project? Wait! Don't throw out those leftover scraps and orphan blocks! Bring them to the BVQ meetings and dump them in the Scrap Bag!

Anything 3/4" or larger is welcome! Skinny scraps 3/4" - 1" wide and a foot or more in length are perfect for wrapping clothesline for making clothesline bowls, or can be used like yarn to knit or crochet into purses (think Madge Ziegler's “Bags from Rags”). Little scraps, especially those left over from fused projects, are great for fabric postcards or fabric collages! Larger scraps can be sewn into crazy quilt blocks or pieced into squares for charity quilts. We'll take orphan blocks or parts of blocks, too. Questions? Check out the FAQ or contact Lil Koster Also let us know if you have any suggestions or special requests.

Whenever you get the itch to make something for an upcoming BVQ auction or charity project, you can dig through the Scrap Bag for fabric to use. (The Scrap Bag is available at most BVQ meetings.) So bring us your tired, your poor, SCRAPS!!

Many thanks,
Lil Koster, “The Scrap Bag Lady”

Scrap Bag FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):

Q. What is acceptable for the BVQ Scrap Bag? The newsletter said a piece as small as 3/4" was OK, but is that the width of a strip, or can it be a square/rectangle piece of material?
A. 3/4" wide strips longer than a foot or so are great for making clothesline bowls. For non-strip scraps, we'll take anything at least 1" on any side.
Q. Are we collecting batting scraps?
A. Not at this time. Due to the large donations of scraps at the March meeting (thank you, everyone!), your Scrap Bag Lady has quite enough to store and tote! However, if anyone needs batting scraps, just ask and we will find you some.
Q. Are members allowed to use the scraps for projects they are working on personally? Sometimes you need just a bit of something!
A. You may take scraps for your own use, but we hope that you will contribute scraps of your own at some point in time. One of our goals for the Scrap Bag is help to keep precious fabric out of the landfills! It can be our "green" initiative!
Q. Much of the fabric in the Scrap Bag is in individual zipper bags. Can I take fabric out of those bags or do I have to take the whole bag?
A. Feel free to take whatever scraps you'd like. If you need a bag to put them in and there are no bags available, ask Lil Koster, SBQ (“Scrap Bag Queen”), for one.
Q. What can I make with those scraps?
A. Grab some red, white and blue scraps for a Quilt of Valor, or grab a baggie or two and make a 9" x 12" quilt for the Priority: Alzheimer's Quilt project. Need more ideas? click here for a .pdf document with lots of suggestions.
