Block of the Month -- April, 2004
SMALL BASKET

Any basket quilt pattern is a favorite among quilters
Block Size -- 8" finished (8½" with seam allowance)

The guild encourages all members to participate in this monthly raffle. It is a fun way to “get your feet wet” quilting and everyone enjoys the chance to win enough blocks for a quilt top. Please take the time to measure and sew accurately. It is very hard to sew together blocks that are not the same measurement. Most guild members would be more than happy to help you get started if you are unsure about how to begin. Let's take our time -- even experienced quilters can have an off day at the sewing machine.

April 2004 Block of the Month -- Small Basket
Small or medium spring floral print:
Cut two 2½" squares
Cut three 2 7/8" squares

White tone-on-tone print:
Cut three 2½" squares
Cut two 2 7/8" squares
Cut one 4 7/8" square
Cut two 2½" x 4½" rectangles
Note: Cut one 2 7/8" square and the 4 7/8" square once diagonally in half

With right sides together, pin one 2 7/8" print square and one 2 7/8" white square together, draw a line down the center from opposite corners, stitch ¼" on both sides of the line and then cut on the line drawn between the stitches.
Do the same for the other 2 7/8" squares.
Looking at the block assembly sample, first stitch the center 4-patch squares together, then stitch the various blocks and other pieces together to make units, and finally stitch the units together.

Keep in mind:
Use 100 % cotton fabrics for the block.
Wash the fabrics before cutting the quilt pattern. Do not use fabrics that bleed or run.
Stitch all seams ¼".
Press seams toward the dark fabric unless the pattern dictates otherwise.

Tip of the Month -- If your needle bends while loading stitches, it is time to pull the needle through.
