Block of the Month -- April, 2009
“Ruins of Jericho”

Block Size -- 8" x 8" finished (8½" x 8½" with seam allowance)

This year, in keeping with our 2008 Quilt Show Theme, we’re going “Around the World with Many Quilts!” Most of the upcoming blocks will be based on a 4-patch grid and will finish to either 8½" or 12½" (including seam allowances).

This is a Nancy Cabot pattern from Maggie Malone's 5,500 Quilt Block Designs.
Easter reminds us of the land of Jericho. A tan background suggests the sands of the desert; a blue to green palette for the remaining shapes evokes the colors of the Sea of Galilee.

Diagram: Fabric: Cutting Directions:
Tan (background) Solid, hand-dye or tone-on-tone tan (sand color) (1) 4½" square
(2) 2 7/8" squares, cut in half diagonally
(4) 1½" x 4½" rectangles
(4) 1½" x 2½" rectangles

(8) 1½" squares

Assembly Instructions:

  1. Pair a light and dark triangle and seam the long side. Press toward the background fabric, taking care not to stretch the bias edge. If shadowing of the darker seam allowance is noticeable, trim it slightly.
  2. Sew a small square to each end of a smaller rectangle. Sew each of these units to the long side of the larger rectangles. Sew two of the resulting units to opposite sides of the large square. Press seams toward the square.
  3. Following the diagram, sew a triangle unit to each end of the remaining rectangle units. Press toward the triangle units.
  4. Following the diagram, join the three rows to form the block.
