2011-2012 Block of the Month -- Storm at Sea Sampler
August, 2011: Block 1 - Pinwheel

This year’s Block of the Month series, presented by Ellen Nobles-Harris, begins with the August, 2011 block. Once again, we are not raffling the blocks - you keep the blocks you make. Bring your finished block to the next Guild meeting to be entered in a drawing for a prize.

Click here to download a pdf document containing both the general instructions for planning your quilt, followed by instructions for the August, 2011 block. Instructions are included for both piecing and paper piecing the blocks.

  • page 3: Step #10 should read “Stitch on the stitching line you drew on 'G'”.
  • page 4: the seam allowance on diagonal side of the triangle template should be labeled 5/16". (This makes it slightly wider than the normal 1/4" seam allowance, to keep the dark fabric from shadowing through the light fabric after pressing.)
  • page 6: Step #1 should read “Cut the Medium Accent fabric crosswise, making 3 strips 5¼" wide.”
  • page 6: measurements given in Steps #2 and #3 should be 5¼" instead of 5".
  • page 6: Step #10 should read “Square to 6 3/16" x 6 3/16".”
  • page 7: Step #15 should read “Cut the Medium Accent fabric crosswise, making 3 strips 5¼" wide.”
  • page 7: measurements given in Step #16 should be 5¼" instead of 5".
  • page 8: measurements given in Step #17 should be 5¼" instead of 5".
