Block of the Month -- February, 2005
HEART
Block Size -- 8" x 8" finished (8½" x 8½" with seam allowance)
The guild encourages all members to participate in this monthly raffle. It is a fun way to get your feet wet quilting and everyone enjoys the chance to win enough blocks for a quilt top. Please take the time to measure and sew accurately. It is very hard to sew together blocks that are not the same measurement. Most guild members would be more than happy to help you get started if you are unsure about how to begin. Let's take our time -- even experienced quilters can have an off day at the sewing machine.

Step 1: Sew together the two 4½" x 1 3/4" red prints (print C and print D) and the 4½" x 2" red print (print E), keeping print E at the top, making 4½" square units. Note that the order of one unit (top to bottom) is Print E, Print D, and Print C and the order of the second unit (top to bottom) is Print E, Print C, and Print D.
Step 2: With right sides together, pin one small white square to the corner of the red stripe units (white square should be on top of print E), draw a diagonal line from opposite corners, and stitch on that line. Cut ¼" from the stitched line that is towards the outside corner. Looking at the sample, do the same for the other corner of the same red rectangle. (Unit 1)
Step 3: Do the same for the other red stripe unit. (Unit 1)
Step 4: With right sides together, pin one 4 7/8" red square and one 4 7/8" (large) white square together, draw a line down the center from opposite corners, stitch ¼" on both sides of the line and then cut between the stitches. (Unit 2)
Step 5: Looking at the sample, join together the two Unit 1's to create a rectangle.
Step 6: Join together the two Unit 2's to create a rectangle.
Step 7: Sew the Unit 1 rectangle to the Unit 2 rectangle.
Keep in mind:
Use 100 % cotton fabrics for the block.
Wash the fabrics before cutting the quilt pattern. Do not use fabrics that bleed or run.
Stitch all seams ¼".
Press seams toward the dark fabric unless the pattern dictates otherwise.
