July 2008 Block of the Month -- Whirling Star
Diagram: Fabric: Cutting Directions:
Red Red print (2) 3 1/8" squares, cut in half diagonally
(2) 2 3/4" squares
Blue Dark blue print (2) 3 1/8" squares, cut in half diagonally
(1) 5 5/8" square, cut in half diagonally twice
(1) 5" square
White White tone-on-tone (4) 2 3/4" squares
(1) 5 5/8" square, cut in half diagonally twice

Assembly Instructions:

  1. Draw a line between opposite corners on the wrong side of each red square. Aligning raw edges, place one of these squares in one corner of the blue square, with either end of the marked line touching the outside edge of the blue square. Sew on the line; flip open and press the red square so that the raw edges meet, forming a corner triangle. Repeat this step on the opposite corner; then repeat with the remaining corners. You may choose to cut away the excess fabric behind the corner triangle, leaving a quarter-inch seam allowance, or you can leave it there for stability.
  2. Pair each red triangle with a small blue triangle and seam along the short side, making sure that the blue triangle is always on the left side of the finished unit. Sew long sides of triangle units to the sides of the square unit.
  3. Pair each blue triangle with a large white triangle and seam along the short side, making sure that the blue triangle is always on the left side of the finished unit. Sew long sides of large triangle units to the sides of the large unit created in Step 2.
