Block of the Month -- June, 2005
BOW TIE

Block Size -- 8" x 8" finished (8½" x 8½" with seam allowance)

The guild encourages all members to participate in this monthly raffle. It is a fun way to “get your feet wet” quilting and everyone enjoys the chance to win enough blocks for a quilt top. Please take the time to measure and sew accurately. It is very hard to sew together blocks that are not the same measurement. Most guild members would be more than happy to help you get started if you are unsure about how to begin. Let's take our time -- even experienced quilters can have an off day at the sewing machine.

June 2005 Block of the Month -- Bow Tie
  Fabric: Cut Directions:
A White Tone-on-tone print (2) -- 4½" x 4½"
B Plaid or Stripe Tie-looking Print (2) -- 4½" x 4½"
(2) -- 2½" x 2½"

Step 1: Mark diagonal on wrong side of the 2½" tie-print squares, match to one corner of the white tone-on-tone print square, and sew on the diagonal line. Trim to ¼" on side that is towards the outside corner. Do the same with the other 2½" tie-print square and white tone-on-tone print square. (Unit 1)
Step 2: Sew Unit 1 to 4½" square of tie-print fabric and press seam towards square of tie-print fabric. (Unit 2). Do the same with the other Unit 1 and 4½" tie-print fabric square. (Unit 2)
Step 3: Looking at the sample, attach the units created in step 2 together to create the block.

Keep in mind:
Use 100 % cotton fabrics for the block.
Wash the fabrics before cutting the quilt pattern. Do not use fabrics that bleed or run.
Stitch all seams ¼".
Press seams toward the dark fabric unless the pattern dictates otherwise.
