Bonus Block of the Month -- March, 2007
“Skyrocket”

Block Size -- 12" x 12" finished (12½" x 12½" with seam allowance)

This month’s block was designed by the innovative Ruby Short McKim and was printed in her book, “101 Patchwork Patterns”, originally published in 1931. You may decide to make it in her suggested colors of gold, green and white or choose red, white and blue for a more patriotic appearance. Whatever you choose, I think you’ll enjoy piecing this rarely seen block.

Happy Quilting!

March 2007 Bonus Block of the Month -- Skyrocket
  Fabric: Cut Directions:
Center Star Light fabric 8 B, 1 C
Rocket Points Medium fabric 4 A, 4 D
Squares Dark fabric 4 C
Background Light fabric 4 E, 4 Er (E reversed)
(no need to reverse if using muslin or solid fabric - just cut 8 and flip 4 of them over)

Step 1. Prepare templates and cut fabric from the pattern pieces. Note that one template (E) is also used in the reversed position (Er).
Step 2. Attach B triangles to A pieces to make squares.
Step 3. Sew these squares to the other C squares according to the block diagram to complete the inner nine-patch.
Step 4. Attach the E and E-reverse pieces to the D pieces. Sew one of these large triangle units to each side of the nine-patch to complete the block.

Keep in mind:
Use 100% cotton fabrics for the block.
Wash the fabrics before cutting the quilt pattern. Do not use fabrics that bleed or run.
Stitch all seams ¼".
Press seams toward the dark fabric unless the pattern dictates otherwise.
