Block of the Month -- May, 2005
RIBBON STAR

Block Size -- 12" finished (12½" with seam allowance)

The guild encourages all members to participate in this monthly raffle. It is a fun way to “get your feet wet” quilting and everyone enjoys the chance to win enough blocks for a quilt top. Please take the time to measure and sew accurately. It is very hard to sew together blocks that are not the same measurement. Most guild members would be more than happy to help you get started if you are unsure about how to begin. Let's take our time -- even experienced quilters can have an off day at the sewing machine.

May 2005 Block of the Month -- Ribbon Star
  Fabric: Cut Directions:
A Fussy-cut child print (1) -- 4 ½" x 4 ½"
B White Tone on Tone Print (2) -- 5" x 5"
C Bright Yellow (2) -- 5" x 5"
D Medium Blue (5) -- 5" x 5"

Step 1: With right sides together, pin one 5" blue square and one 5" yellow square together, draw a line down the center from opposite corners, stitch ¼" on both sides of the line and then cut on the line drawn between the stitches. Square up to 4½". Do the same with the other 5" blue square and 5" yellow square.
Step 2: Do the same with the two 5" blue squares and two 5" white squares.
Step 3: Create two rows the same: attach a half-square triange unit from step 2 to either side of a half-square triangle unit from step 1. Pay attention to direction. Press seam towards corner units.
Step 4: Attach last two half-square triangles from step 1 to either side of the fussy-cut child print. Pay attention to direction. Press seams toward child print.
Step 5: Attach rows from step 3 to either side of rows from step 4 to create the block as shown. Pay attention to direction.

Keep in mind:
Use 100 % cotton fabrics for the block.
Wash the fabrics before cutting the quilt pattern. Do not use fabrics that bleed or run.
Stitch all seams ¼".
Press seams toward the dark fabric unless the pattern dictates otherwise.
