“Flower Basket”

Block Size -- 9" x 9" finished (9½" x 9½" with seam allowance)

May 2008 Block of the Month -- Flower Basket  
Diagram: Fabric: Cutting Directions:
Flowers Colorful fabrics - florals or other, assorted or same (3) 3 1/8" squares, cut in half diagonally
Foliage Green (2) 3 1/8" squares, cut in half diagonally
Basket Medium or dark brown (1) 3 1/8" square, cut in half diagonally
(1) 5 3/8" square, cut in half diagonally
Background White or light tone-on-tone (2) 2 3/4" x 5" strips
(3) 3 1/8" squares, cut in half diagonally
(1) 5 3/8" square, cut in half diagonally

Assembly Instructions:
(Note: you will have some leftover triangles to save for another project.)

  1. Row 1: Piece a background triangle and a flower triangle to make a flower/background square. Make 4 more of these units. Following the diagram, join 3 of these units together in a row.
  2. Row 2: Piece a foliage triangle and a flower triangle to make a square. Following the diagram, join to a flower/background square; then add a foliage triangle.
  3. Row 3: Following the diagram, add a foliage triangle to the remaining flower/background square.
  4. Following the diagram, join rows 1, 2 and 3, and then add the large basket triangle to complete a 9-patch square.
  5. Sew a small basket triangle to one end of a background strip; piece a mirror-image unit using remaining strip and small basket triangle. Sew units to adjacent sides of flower basket unit; add the large background triangle as shown.
