Block of the Month -- October, 2007
“Floating Leaf”

Block Size -- 9" x 9" finished (9½" x 9½" with seam allowance)

Set multiple Floating Leaf blocks, varying their orientation to give the effect of falling leaves. For your sampler quilt, join four leaf units together (omitting the background strips) for a 9" finished block. Be creative and have fun!

October 2007 Block of the Month -- Floating Leaf Variations   Be adventurous and try one of these variations:
  1. Substitute for the background square (patch “a”): cut a 1½" square of leaf fabric and add 1" strips of background fabric to make a 2" square.
  2. Substitute a pieced triangle for the background patch (patch “b”) of the corner half-square triangles.
(Note: you will have some leftover triangles to save for another project.)

Assembly Instructions:
  1. Piece the four half-square triangle squares; press seam toward the leaf fabric; trim to 2" squares. Join in pairs to make 2 two-square units. Following the diagram, add the background square to one of the units.
  2. Add the stem to the large background triangle, using your method of choice. Seam the large triangles along their long sides; press seam toward the leaf fabric. Trim to 3½" square.
  3. Following the diagram, assemble the leaf unit. Add enough random-width strips to make a 9½" block.
