Block of the Month -- October, 2008
“Trip Around the World”

Block Size -- 8" x 8" finished (8½" x 8½" with seam allowance)

This year, to go along with our 2008 Quilt Show Theme, we’re going “Around the World with Many Quilts!” Most of the upcoming blocks will be based on a 4-patch grid and will finish to either 8½" or 12½" (including seam allowances).

We know you are busy finishing your entries for our quilt show this month, so we’re keeping the BOM simple again. Pull your fall-color fabrics for this block - the busier the better! This is a great way to use up a few scraps.

October 2008 Block of the Month -- Trip Around the World
Diagram: Fabric: Cutting Directions:
Dark print Dark fall print (4) 2½" squares
Medium-dark print 1 - 2 Medium to medium-dark fall prints (6) 2½" squares of a single fabric OR
(3) 2½" squares of each of two fabrics
Medium print 1 - 2 Medium-light to medium fall prints (4) 2½" squares of a single fabric OR
(2) 2½" squares of each of two fabrics
Light print Light to medium-light fall print (2) 2½" squares (can be different fabrics)

Assembly Instructions:

  1. Lay out all 16 squares according to the above diagram. Using two different fabrics for each of the medium tones will add more interest! If you choose to do that, arrange the squares so that the same fabric appears in each diagonal row.
  2. Sew the squares into rows. Press each seam allowance of the row first and third rows in the same direction; press each seam allowance of the second and fourth rows in the opposite direction.
  3. Sew the rows together to complete the block. If you pressed the seam allowances correctly in Step 2, they should “nestle” together, allowing the seam intersections to meet perfectly when sewn!
