Block of the Month -- October, 2009
“Dutchman's Puzzle” (Block 3 of 12)

Block Size -- 12" x 12" finished (12½" x 12½" with seam allowance)

New BOM Ladies Sue Nann and Lee Hickman have a great idea for the Block of the Month for August 2009 - July 2010. Each month we will publish a different variation of the Dutchman's Puzzle block. Each month, make up the block pattern in your choice of fabrics. Bring it to the next Guild meeting - you'll be entered in a drawing for a prize. You get to keep your block and at the end of the year, you'll have enough blocks for a quilt! Download this pdf-format document to read all the details.

Diagram: Fabric: Cutting Directions:
Dark triangles Dark print (8) 3½" squares
Medium triangles Medium print (8) 3½" x 6½" rectangles
Light triangles White tone-on-tone print (8) 3½" squares

Assembly Instructions:

  1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 8 white tone-on-tone squares. With right sides together, layer one white tone-on-tone 3½" square on the right side of the medium 3½" x 6½" rectangles with the diagonal line going from upper left side to lower right side. Sew directly on top of the drawn line. Cut away excess fabric ¼" from the seam line. Press seam allowance towards white fabric.
  2. With right sides together, layer another white tone-on-tone square on the left side of all the units made in Step 1. The diagonal line should go from lower left side to upper right side. Sew directly on top of the line. Cut away excess fabric ¼" from the seam line. Press seam allowance towards the white fabric.
  3. Trim units as needed to bring them back to original size of 3½" x 6½". Be sure all points are crisp.
  4. Repeat Steps 1 - 3, using the 8 dark 3½" squares layered on the medium rectanges.
  5. Attach the white/medium units to the dark/medium units as per diagram. Press to the larger triangle. Trim units to 6½" square.
  6. Join units together to create block as shown. Trim to measure 12½" x 12½".
