Block of the Month -- September, 2003
LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE

Block Size -- 12" finished (12½" with seam allowance)

The guild encourages all members to participate in this monthly raffle. It is a fun way to “get your feet wet” quilting and everyone enjoys the chance to win enough blocks for a quilt top. Please take the time to measure and sew accurately. It is very hard to sew together blocks that are not the same measurement. Most guild members would be more than happy to help you get started if you are unsure about how to begin. Let's take our time -- even experienced quilters can have an off day at the sewing machine.

September Block of the Month -- Little Red Schoolhouse
Small Red Print for front of school and chimney:

Cut two 3 7/8 " squares
Cut three 2½" x 6½" rectangles

Second Small Red Print for side of school:
Cut two 2½" x 4½" rectangles
Cut two 2½" x 6½" rectangles

Third Small Red Print for roof:
Cut one 3½" square
Cut two 3 7/8 " squares

White tone-on-tone print:
Cut one 2½" x 4½" rectangle
Cut one 2½" x 6½" rectangle
Cut two 3 7/8 " squares
Cut two 1½" x 5½" rectangles

With right sides together, pin one 3 7/8" red square of the first small red print and one 3 7/8" white square together, draw a line down the center from opposite corners, stitch ¼" on both sides of the line and then cut on the line drawn between the stitches.
Do the same for the other 3 7/8" red square of the first small red print and the 3 7/8" red square of the third small red print.
Do the same for the other 3 7/8" red square of the first small red print the other 3 7/8" white square.
NOTE: USE ONLY THREE DIFFERENT SQUARE UNITS. Save the other three different squares for future quilt projects.
Looking at the sample, sew two first red print 2½" x 6½" rectangles to the white 2½" x 6½" rectangle (door). Then sew two second red print 2½" x 4½" rectangles to the white 2½" x 4½" rectangle (window) and then sew the 2½" x 6½" rectangle to the bottom.
Looking at the top row of the sample, correctly pin the pieces together and stitch. Stitch the reamining rows as seen. Then stitch the rows together.

Keep in mind:
Use 100 % cotton fabrics for the block.
Wash the fabrics before cutting the quilt pattern. Do not use fabrics that bleed or run.
Stitch all seams ¼".
Press seams toward the dark fabric unless the pattern dictates otherwise.

Tip of the Month -- Use white tailor's chalk on dark fabric. It hand-brushes off easily.
