Block of the Month -- September, 2007
Schoolhouse
Block Size -- 9" x 9" finished (9½" x 9½" with seam allowance)
Just in time for "back to school", here is the Pieced Schoolhouse Block from Maggie Malone's book, 5,500 Quilt Block Designs. Wouldn't a quilt full of these blocks look cute sashed, with apples for the teacher in the setting squares? Here's a bonus pattern for a 3" foundation-pieced apple block, adapted from a Quiltmaker Magazine design.

Assembly Instructions:
Draw a diagonal line between opposite corners on the wrong sides of the tan 2¾" squares. With right sides together and the diagonal lines positioned in opposite directions, align the squares at each end of the 2¾" x 9½" roof rectangle. Stitch along the diagonal lines. Leaving a ¼" seam allowance, trim away excess fabric triangles and press seams toward roof.
Following the diagram, piece the strips for the chimneys/sky and windows.
Following the diagram, assemble the pieced strips and remaining rectangles to form the schoolhouse block.
Tips to consider:
Use 100% cotton fabrics for the block. Wash fabrics before cutting. Do not use fabrics that bleed or run!
Arrange the patches on a piece of felt, flannel or batting before sewing to aid in assembly.
Stitch all seams ¼". Please try to be accurate!
Press seams toward the dark fabric if possible, taking care not to stretch any bias edges.
