Bonus Block of the Month -- September, 2007
An Apple for the Teacher
Block Size -- 3" x 3" finished (3½" x 3½" with seam allowance)
Here's a bonus pattern for a 3" foundation-pieced apple block, adapted from a Quiltmaker Magazine design. Use it for setting squares in a sashed quilt of Schoolhouse blocks (the September 2007 Block of the Month), or enlarge the pattern to a size of your choice and make several to assemble into a festive fall table runner!

Construction notes:
- Pattern is the reverse of the finished block.
- The unnumbered area around the foundation pattern is the 1/4 " seam allowance.
- Print out the foundation pattern. It should be 3 inches square; if not, you may want to reduce or enlarge it to the desired size.
- The top strip, lettered A through E, is patch number 6, which makes up the stem and leaf of the apple. You will need to copy or trace the strip and add seam allowances to make a separate pattern for it. Piece the strip in the sequence A-B-C-D-E and set it aside until you need it for the sixth foundation patch.
- Now foundation-piece your apple...have fun!
Tips to consider:
- Use 100% cotton fabrics for the block. Wash fabrics before cutting. Do not use fabrics that bleed or run!
- Arrange the patches on a piece of felt, flannel or batting before sewing to aid in assembly.
- Stitch all seams ¼". Please try to be accurate!
- Press seams toward the dark fabric if possible, taking care not to stretch any bias edges.
