Block of the Month -- September, 2009
Dutchman's Puzzle (Block 2 of 12)
Block Size -- 12" x 12" finished (12½" x 12½" with seam allowance)
New BOM Ladies Sue Nann and Lee Hickman have a great idea for the Block of the Month for August 2009 - July 2010. Each month we will publish a different variation of the Dutchman's Puzzle block. Each month, make up the block pattern in your choice of fabrics. Bring it to the next Guild meeting - you'll be entered in a drawing for a prize. You get to keep your block and at the end of the year, you'll have enough blocks for a quilt! Download this pdf-format document to read all the details.

Assembly Instructions:
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 12 white tone on tone squares and
the 4 dark squares. With right sides together, layer one white on white 3½" square
on the right side of 4 medium 3½" x 6½" rectangles with the diagonal line going
from upper left side to lower right side. With right sides together, layer one dark
3½" square on the right side of the other 4 medium 3½" x 6½" rectangles. Sew directly on top of the drawn line. Cut away excess fabric ¼" from the seam line. Press seam allowance towards white fabric.
With right sides together, layer another white tone on tone square on the left side
of all the units made above. Diagonal line should go from lower left side to upper
right side. Sew directly on top of the line. Cut away excess fabric ¼" from the
seam line. Press seam allowance towards the white fabric.
Trim units as needed to bring them back to original size of 3½" x 6½". Be sure all points are crisp.
Attach units as per diagram. Press to the larger triangle. Trim units to 6½" square.
Join units together to create block as shown. Trim to measure 12½" x 12½".
Tips to consider:
Use 100% cotton fabrics for the block. Wash fabrics before cutting. Do not use fabrics that bleed or run!
It helps to arrange the patches on a piece of felt, flannel or batting before sewing to aid in assembly.
Stitch all seams using a scant ¼" seam allowance. Please try to be accurate!
Unless otherwise specified, press seams toward the dark fabric if possible, taking care not to stretch any bias edges.
