We hope you are enjoyed our 2010 quilt show! “SOMETHING NEW FROM SOMETHING OLD...Decades of Thread Stories” featured the ingenuity and creativity of quilters who turn old clothes and scraps of fabric into quilts to snuggle under (please don't call them “blankets”!) and amazing works of art to adorn their walls.

Judges

This year, BVQ is honored to have NQA Certified Judges Stacy Koehler and Phyllis Manley to judge our show entries.

Stacy Koehler is a quilt designer, teacher and NQA certified judge. She has been teaching quilting since 2000 and has been judging since April, 2007.
“I started my first quilt about 35 years ago, finished it 25 years ago, and realized how bad it was about 20 years ago. Since then I’ve been working to be a better quilting and gotten deeper into the quilting world. .

“In addition to making quilts, I teach in shops and adult education programs. I am a member of Undercover Quilters, a guild based in Aston, PA., where I’ve served as president, education chair and show chair. I show my work locally and nationally and occasionally do a commission. I entered NQA’s Judging Certification Program in 2002 and became certified in 2005. I continue to go back to NQA’s annual show in Columbus and serve as technology aide for the show judging staff. My newest quilting challenge is learning to be a longarmer. Thus far, that machine is keeping me humble; it’s sort of a 4 by 10 foot humility block!”
When she is not quilting, Stacy works at a school for special needs students, where she is an occupational therapist and provides adapted technology services to the students and training for the staff.

As an avid quilter for the past 39 years, Phyllis Manley finds creativity, warmth and comfort in quilting. The quilts become a part of her, and she loves to give them away to family and friends. In order to create such treasure, she constantly pushes herself to stay on the cutting edge of new and innovative technique.

She returns each year to the NQA Show to stay in contact with quilters around the country and to broaden her knowledge. She also plays key roles in that judging process at the national show. Along with judging, she also teaches, lectures and does longarm quilting, but most of all she enjoys quilting.

Phyllis was certified as a NQA judge in 2006 and as a NQA master judge in 2008.

Special Display Of BVQ Challenge Quilts

BVQ is featuring a very special display at this year's show. 25 participants in our 2010 Challenge made 9" x 12" quilts from packets of scraps from our Scrap Bag.

Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative   The Challenge was inspired by Ami Simms’ Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilt project, part of her Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI). Most of the Challenges on display were available for sale at the show, with proceeds to be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, and any of those that remained unsold at the conclusion of the show will be donated to AAQI for their online auction. Learn more about AAQI at www.alzquilts.org.

Auction

This year, we will be having a “Chinese Auction” in addition to our live auction - more ways to win cool stuff!

The Chinese Auction will feature many baskets of goodies, some quilt-related and some not. When you come to the show, you will receive a ticket for the Chinese auction. Check out all of the baskets on display, find one you can't live without write your name and phone number on the ticket, and deposit it in the container with the basket. If you can't make up your mind, you can buy more tickets - maximize your chances to win!

The live auction will start at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, October 16 (a bit earlier than at our previous shows). Pick up an auction list and view all of the items on display in the Café room prior to the auction, so you can decide which items you'd like to bid on.

There will be many wonderful quilts, quilted accessories and quilt-related items for your bidding pleasure, including a vintage treadle sewing machine and an AccuQuilt GO!® cutter! In addition, there are some non-quilt-themed gift baskets for you folks who aren't quilters. Proceeds from these items will benefit BVQ’s educational programs and community service projects. To pique your interest, here are just a few of the items we'll be auctioning!
Treadle Sewing Machine   White Rotary Co.Treadle Sewing Machine circa 1913

(Reserve set at $75.00)
Research shows that these machines go for between $150-175. The belt is dry rotted but the cabinet is in excellent condition and the machine should work once cleaned and the belt replaced. All attachments are included as are the directions (although some of the pages are falling apart).

Log Cabin Wallhanging   Log Cabin Wallhanging - “Scraps in the Cabin”

Machine pieced and quilted by BVQ member, 40" x 40" - sleeve on back for hanging. Undercover Quilters may recognize some of their scraps, as this quilt was made from a kit purchased at Undercovers' 2003 quilt show boutique. Finally completed - UFO no more!

Demonstrations

Several BVQ members presented demonstrations during the show.

Deb Kelly demonstrates fabric boxes   Attendees got lots of ideas for using their fabric scraps, tips on binding quilts, instructions for making a “string” quilt and a quick and easy way to make a pillowcase with just three seams.

After the pillowcase demo, show visitors were invited to a “Sit and Sew” session to make pillowcases for ConKerr Cancer. BVQ thanks Cindy and the gang at ConKerr for providing the sewing machines.

We were disappointed that BJ Titus had to cancel her presentation, and we thank Deb Kelly for repeating her Fabric Boxes demo in that time slot. If you attended the demo and purchased a kit to make a fabric box and did not get the LONG piece (that is the sides of the box), email Deb at dlk10852@gmail.com and she will send you the missing piece.
