Congratulations to former BVQ member Joan Scone and current member and talented longarmer Moria Wikstrom-Fischer, whose stunning quilt, New York to Bali, was recognized as Best in Show. If that weren't enough, it also received the most votes for Best Interpretation of Theme!
Congratulations also to former BVQ member Carole Forsythe, for winning Viewer's Choice for her fabulous hand-quilted batik quilt, New Journey, and to all the rest of the ribbon winners. Stay tuned for pictures of the blue ribbon winners and show highlights, coming soon.
If you attended the show, we hope you took a few moments to read through the show program. The introductory article contained some interesting details about the history of quilting. The coral-colored pages in the center of the program contained, the winners' list, advertisements from our local sponsors, and information about BVQ meetings, including a guest pass and a coupon for discount on a new membership to BVQ! Thanks to Deb Kelly and Maureen Bonnes for the great job they did compiling and publishing the program.
I've been trying to make things since I was a teenager and took the mattress and box springs off my bed so I could turn the bed frame into a loom. Someone finally took pity on me and taught me 2 macramé knots, which at least got my bed back in one piece and kept me going for a while. I learned to weave, dye and spin in college (What can I say? It was the 60's.) and kept at that for about 10 years. It was wonderful, but kind of difficult to get the raw materials. Then my best friend sent me a rotary cutter, mat and acrylic ruler---the basic quilting tools---about 20 years ago and that was that. When she is not quilting, Stacy works at a school for special needs students, where she is an occupational therapist and provides adapted technology services to the students and training for the staff. She also volunteers at a school for special needs in the Bahamas. Stacy lives near Philadelphia with her daughter, dog, cats, a succession of college students, a semi-adopted daughter and about 2000 pieces of fabric.
In addition to making quilts, I teach in shops and adult education programs. I am a member of Undercover Quilters, a guild based in Aston, PA., where I've served as president, education chair and show chair. I show my work locally and nationally and occasionally do a commission. I entered NQA's Judging Certification Program in 2002 and became certified in 2005. I continue to go back to NQA's annual show in Columbus and serve as technology aide for the show judging staff. My newest quilting challenge is learning to be a longarmer. Thus far, that machine is keeping me humble; it's sort of a 4 by 10 foot humility block!

  | This year, we auctioned The Pink Quilt, in recognition of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Thank you to the winning bidder, who generously bid $250 for this quilt! All proceeds from this sale will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure, to support breast cancer research.
The quilt measured 60" x 72". The heart and sampler blocks were made by various BVQ members. The heart blocks were our February, 2008, Block-of-the-Month, and were generously donated by BOM winner Nancy Campbell. The top was assembled by Lil Koster and longarm machine quilted by Rikki Newlander. |
There were many other wonderful quilts and quilt-related items, a few of which are pictured below. Thanks to the generosity of the auction participants, proceeds from these items will benefit BVQ’s educational programs and community service projects.
